November marks the 10th anniversary of celebrating the revitalization of historic properties in McKinney. The City of McKinney Historic Preservation Advisory Board (HPAB) established the Preserve Historic McKinney – Home Recognition Program in 2008 to recognize residential properties in the historic district whose owners have made significant financial improvements in the rehabilitation of their homes.
“The Home Recognition Program is a way for us to celebrate the time, commitment and economic efforts property owners take to preserve, restore and revitalize our beautiful historic downtown. It is also a way to encourage others to consider future individual reinvestment in the residential area,” said Guy Giersch, Historic Preservation Officer.
Each year, 14 properties are highlighted to be featured in the Home Recognition Program calendar. Nominations are evaluated by assessing the property’s perceived impact on the surrounding area and how closely the property embraces the mission statement of the Historic Preservation Advisory Board, which is to maintain McKinney’s diverse architectural legacy, enrich the cultural identity of the community and strengthen economic value through preservation and education for our present and future generations.
Nominations may be submitted by anyone, including the property owner, but the property must be located in McKinney’s historic district. Nomination forms are available online and must be submitted by Nov. 13 to Guy Giersch by email. The cost of printing the calendars is covered by ad space purchased by business owners.
For a list of locations to pick up a free copy of the calendar and for more information, visit the Home Recognition page.
